Swedish cohabitee act

Many couples in Sweden are in long-term relationships, with children, but remain unmarried. Thus, the Swedish Cohabitee Act was formulated in order to regulate division of the joint home and property in the event of the relationship ending. The protection is limited compared to that provided for married couples and registered partners.

A "cohabitee" is a person who lives together with another as a couple on a permanent basis. Whether the cohabitees are of the opposite sex or of the same sex is of no importance. If you would like to read more the Swedish Ministry of Justice has made a leaflet called: Cohabitees and their joint homes.
